This time of year I am always busy running workshops teaching shibori stitch resist. Back at the end of June I ran a most enjoyable day at Malmesbury, Wiltshire for the Malmesbury Quilters Group, a wonderfully full on and busy day with so much superb work produced.
I gave a talk about “Creating with Shibori” the evening before so the participants were raring to go on the Saturday morning! Their heads full of the possibilities of shibori.
New Shibori Ideas to Inspire You
Let me share with you some of the lovely Shibori ideas they came up with and show you some of the original fabrics created to give a taster of the day. I hope these images will be an inspiration for your creative projects.
1. CIRCLE MAGIC
On this day there seemed to be a predominance of working with circular motives. Using them to create abstract designs and using them to make natural forms. This image shows the use of lines and tying in beads, two very different designs created depending on how to the lines are placed.
These two fabrics create a suggestion of the natural world, one piece using hills and trees with different approaches to making circles produces an attractive stylised landscape, the other a suggestion of a field of wild flowers.
There is nothing quite as pleasing as a collection of circles made with different shibori techniques. As all these examples show.
2. SHIMMERING STRIPES
This is a satisfying textile design showing different ways of making stripes, simple folding with running stitches, over sewing and pleated ori nui folds. A beautiful watery feeling achieved.
3. FASCINATING FISH
And to round off these two fish pattern fabrics produced in similar ways by folding the fabric in half and stitching the fish shape. Here is a description of how to create simple fish shapes in shibori.
It is lovely to be invited to give a talk and a workshop to a thriving textile group. There is something special about running a workshop for individuals who know each other well and are especially supportive of each other.
Please do make contact if you and your local group are interested in a special shibori day workshop. I am now booking for 2018.
